Substitutes for Southern Comfort with ratios

  1. 2Bourbon plus peach preserves and a little syrup

    Different texture

Use 2 tbsp bourbon + 1 tsp peach preserves + ½ tsp simple syrup for every 2 tbsp Southern Comfort

The cupboard version, using jam for the peach and syrup for the sweetness.

    What changes
    Best for
peach-glazed ham, barbecue sauce, punch, cocktails, baking

Works well and is often more peachy than the real thing, since fruit preserves taste of actual peach rather than peach flavouring. For a clear drink, strain out the fruit solids or use peach nectar instead, or you will get pulp floating in the glass. In a glaze or a barbecue sauce the pulp is a bonus and helps the glaze cling.

  2. 3Peach schnapps alone

    Different taste

    Use the same amount

Sweet peach liqueur, lower in alcohol than whiskey and without any whiskey flavour.

    What changes
    Best for
Alabama Slammer, fuzzy navel variations, punch, fruit cocktails

Perfectly serviceable in a busy drink and useless in a simple one, which is worth distinguishing. In an Alabama Slammer, where amaretto and sloe gin are already crowding the glass, the missing whiskey barely registers. In a Southern Comfort and lime or a SoCo on the rocks, the drink loses its whole spine and becomes flabby and candied. Also sweeter than Southern Comfort, so cut any added syrup.

  3. 4Bourbon or Tennessee whiskey plus sugar

    Different taste

Use the same amount plus ½ tsp simple syrup per tablespoon

Straight American whiskey with sweetness added to match a liqueur.

    What changes
    Best for
punch, glazes, baking, Old Fashioned variations, bread pudding

Do not skip the sugar. Southern Comfort is a liqueur, and the sugar is doing real structural work in a drink, holding the citrus and the alcohol together. Swap in bourbon alone and the drink lands suddenly dry, hot and sharp, which is the single most common complaint about this substitution. With half a teaspoon of syrup per tablespoon the balance returns, minus the peach.

  4. 5Apricot brandy or apricot liqueur

    Different taste

    Use the same amount

Sweetened stone-fruit liqueur, similar in strength and sweetness to Southern Comfort.

    What changes
    Best for
punch, Alabama Slammer, glazes, fruit desserts, baking

Lands in the right neighbourhood: sweet, stone-fruit, liqueur-strength. Apricot is tangier and slightly more tart than peach, with less of the honeyed roundness, so a punch made with it tastes brighter and a little sharper. Like peach schnapps, it has no whiskey character, so add a splash of bourbon if the recipe is whiskey-forward. Good in a ham glaze.

  5. 6Peach nectar plus strong black tea and a pinch of spice (no alcohol)

    Different taste

Use 1 tbsp peach nectar + 1 tbsp strong black tea + a pinch of cinnamon for every 2 tbsp Southern Comfort

An alcohol-free build covering peach, sweetness, tannin and spice.

    What changes
    Best for
punch, glazed ham, barbecue sauce, alcohol-free cooking, mocktails

Better than it sounds, particularly in a glaze, because the tea provides the tannic grip and slight bitterness that whiskey would have and the nectar covers the peach and the sugar. In a ham glaze the result is genuinely good. In a drink it reads as spiced peach iced tea, which is pleasant but has none of the warmth the liqueur gives, since that came from alcohol.

What is Southern Comfort?

Southern Comfort is Southern Comfort, often shortened to SoCo, is a sweetened American whiskey liqueur flavoured with peach and warm spice, bottled well below whiskey strength and carrying a great deal of sugar.

Cooking tips

  • Southern Comfort is a liqueur, not a whiskey, and that is the fact behind most failed substitutions. Depending on the bottling it runs from about 20 to 35 percent alcohol and it is sweetened, so replacing it with straight bourbon changes both strength and sugar. If you take one thing from this page, it is to add the sugar back.
  • Read the label on your bottle if you own one, because Southern Comfort has been reformulated over the years and different markets carry different strengths. A 100 proof bottling exists and behaves very differently in a punch from the standard one.
  • For a peach-glazed ham, the peach and the sugar matter far more than the whiskey. Peach preserves thinned with a little bourbon and a splash of cider vinegar makes an excellent glaze and is easier to control than the liqueur, which can scorch because of its sugar content.
  • If you are batching a punch, taste it cold rather than at room temperature. Sweet liqueurs and their substitutes read much sweeter warm, and a punch balanced at room temperature usually ends up thin and sour once it is over ice.
  • In an Alabama Slammer the Southern Comfort is one sweet component among several, so if you substitute with something sweeter such as peach schnapps, pull back the grenadine or the sloe gin slightly or the drink turns into syrup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just leave the Southern Comfort out?

In a glaze or a barbecue sauce, largely yes, since the peach and sugar can come from preserves instead. In a punch you can leave it out and increase the other spirits, but the drink will be drier and less rounded. In a Southern Comfort and lime, no, because it is the drink, and the sugar in it is what makes the lime work.

Is Southern Comfort actually whiskey?

It is a whiskey-based liqueur rather than a whiskey. There is whiskey in it, but it is sweetened and flavoured with peach and spice and bottled at a lower strength, which is why it tastes soft and fruity rather than sharp. Treat it as a liqueur when you substitute: match the sugar as well as the spirit, or the recipe will taste noticeably harsher.

What is the best substitute for SoCo in an Alabama Slammer?

Equal parts bourbon and peach schnapps, poured in place of the Southern Comfort measure. Peach schnapps alone also works because the drink already contains amaretto and sloe gin, though it makes the glass sweeter, so cut the grenadine back a touch. Straight bourbon on its own leaves the drink noticeably drier and out of balance unless you add syrup.

Can I use peach schnapps instead of Southern Comfort 1:1?

Yes in a mixed drink, with reservations. Peach schnapps is sweeter and lower in alcohol and has no whiskey character at all, so the swap works where other flavours are doing the heavy lifting and fails where the whiskey was the point. Adding a splash of bourbon to the schnapps fixes it almost completely.

Does Southern Comfort work in baking, and what replaces it there?

It bakes well in peach cobbler, bread pudding and pound cake, where its sugar and peach flavour both contribute. To replace it, use bourbon at the same volume plus a teaspoon of peach preserves per two tablespoons, and reduce the recipe's sugar slightly since you are adding jam. For an alcohol-free version, peach nectar with a pinch of cinnamon works fine.
